Florian Jungwirth added another in the 32nd minute, to leave the American defense stunned and unable to react. Manuel Schäffler made it 3-0 in minute 72 to end any doubts that may have remained.

Germany play their second game against South Korea on Tuesday, while the United States face a must-win against Cameroon.

Gomis ´can´t wait´ to welcome Payet to Marseille

Bafetimbi Gomis would be delighted to welcome Dimitri Payet back to Marseille if the unsettled West Ham star opts for a return to Ligue 1.

Payet went from hero to villain with the West Ham faithful when manager Slaven Bilic told reporters the France playmaker had declared he would not play for the club in the build-up to Saturday s 3-0 win over Crystal Palace.

According to reports by La Provence, Marseille president Jacques-Henri Eyraud will travel to London on Monday to meet with West Ham representatives and discuss an unexpectedly swift return for Payet to the club he left in 2015.

Gomis, who is on loan at Marseille from West Ham s Premier League rivals Swansea City and has 10 goals in 19 Ligue 1 appearances this season, spoke enthusiastically about a potential…

Inter Milan set Joao Mario price

Serie A heavyweights Inter Milan kave determined an asking price for the Wolverhampton Wanderers target Joao Mario.

The Portuguese midfielder spent the second part of the 2017/18 season at West Ham United who failed to buy him outright but Mario looks set for a Premier League stay nevertheless.

Superagent Jorge Mendes is believed to be pushing for a move to Wolves where a contingent of Portuguese players would feel Joao Mario welcome and help him settle in nicely.

Gazzetta dello Sport claims Inter Milan would not stop in his way and would be willing to sell the midfielder to Wolves for a transfer fee believed to be in the region of €25 million.

Former Sporting Lisbon midfielder moved to Italy at the beginning of the 2016/17 season but only managed thre…

Lyon miss out on return to summit

Lyon missed out on the chance to return to top spot, at least overnight, in the French league after a disappointing goalless draw Saturday at Boulogne.

With reigning champions and leaders Bordeaux hosting surprise title aspirants Montpellier on Sunday the way was clear for Lyon, a record seven titles in a row between 2002 and 2008, to reach the summit with a win.

But instead Claude Puel s men fired blanks against a Boulogne side standing second from bottom of the table with only three wins all season.

Boulogne skipper Damien Marcq almost embarrassed the visitors who were too good for Real Madrid in their Champions League round of 16 first leg last month on 15 minutes, a snapshot hitting the post with Lyon keeper Hugo Lloris beaten.

At the other end Mathi…

Fergie lays into FA over Gerrard let-off

Sir Alex Ferguson has launched an angry verbal attack on the FA s disciplinary unit for their failure to punish Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard this week.

Gerrard will take his place in the Liverpool team that visits Old Trafford on Sunday for what is always one of the most eagerly-awaited, and contentious, fixtures in the Premier League.

But he could quite easily have been serving a suspension after television replays clearly showed him elbowing Portsmouth s Michael Brown in a confrontation during Liverpool?s 4-1 league victory on Monday.

In January, and in almost identical circumstances, the FA handed United defender Rio Ferdinand a retrospective three-match suspension after video evidence showed him elbowing an opponent during a victory over Hull City.

Copa Libertadores Preview: Do-or-die for Corinthians

Corinthians must overturn a two-goal deficit if they are to prolong their Copa Libertadores campaign beyond the round of 16.

Adenor Leonardo Bacchi s team trail Paraguayan outfit Guarani 2-0 heading into Wednesday s return leg in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Corinthians conceded two goals in the second half to leave themselves with a mountain to climb in their bid to join Tigres UANL, who are the only team so far to progress past the last-16, in the quarter-finals.

The 2012 champions, however, head into their second leg against Guarani on the back of a 1-0 victory over reigning Brazilian Serie A champions Cruzeiro in the opening round of their domestic league on Sunday.

I accept any result if the opponent is better than me. It is a football game, it s not kill or …

Manchester United 1 Tottenham 0: Mkhitaryan winner earns United victory

Henrikh Mkhitaryan s first Premier League goal led Manchester United to a 1-0 victory over Tottenham that kept Jose Mourinho s men in contact with the top five as the visitors miserable away form continued.

Mkhitaryan netted after 29 minutes of a contest in which United looked as confident and composed as they have since Mourinho took over as manager at Old Trafford, but the Armenian winger was taken off on a stretcher in the closing stages after injuring his ankle.

The result gave the Red Devils their first home victory in the league since September, while Spurs winless run on the road in all competitions now stretches to eight matches.

It was the style and swagger of United s forwards that will have most pleased Mourinho, as his expensively assembled attack p…

UEFA removes 30 per cent cap limit on spectators

UEFA has lifted its cap on the number of spectators allowed to attend matches in competitions organised by the governing body.

In October, the organisation s executive committee ruled stadiums could allow fans at up to 30 per cent capacity, with limits still in place due to the coronavirus pandemic.

However, UEFA on Wednesday decided that due to the different circumstances each of its 55 member nations faces amid the global health crisis, each national or local organisation will have jurisdiction to set its own limits.

UEFA added, though, that visiting fans are still not allowed to attend due to travel restrictions.

The statement read: The UEFA executive committee reviewed its decision of 1 October 2020 whereby it allowed the return of spectators to UEF…

Atletico boss Simeone hoping Griezmann can respond to critics after Porto draw

Diego Simeone hopes Antoine Griezmann will soon respond to his critics after Atletico Madrid were held to a goalless draw with Porto in the Champions League.

Atletico failed to win their opening game for the third consecutive season and are now winless in four home matches in Europe s premier club competition, their joint-longest streak without a victory.

Griezmann was introduced as a second-half substitute amid boos in search of a winner but failed to provide attacking impetus as he did not manage to record a single touch in Porto s box.

Following an underwhelming second debut against Espanyol following his return from Barcelona on loan, the pressure is now on the France forward, who already had to win supporters over on his comeback after his move to Camp Nou.…
